Talk about a BIG Baby

The babies seem to be getting Bigger ........

At the moment the Cria seem to want to stay in their mum’s tummy a bit longer than usual and as a result I have heard of some very big Cria being born. I have also heard of quite a lot that Breeders have had to get the Vet out to pull these Cria out.

This is mostly due to the Females being overweight and making the “outlet” smaller than it should be. But in saying this there are some big Cria being born.

So just how big is a big baby? …………

Well I hear figures like 10 kg to 13 kg and these are obviously big Cria but the other aspect to consider is the size of the mum who delivers these monsters.

Remember most Cria are born around the 5 to7 kg range.

We think we have just produced the record sized Cria in comparison to the size of the mum.

Mum (Julia) weighs in at a tiny 56 kg(after giving birth) and her Cria (yet to be named) was a staggering 10 kg exactly.

This means that the Cria was 17.68% of the mothers weight, which is amazing when you think about it.

Our Daughter in law had her first baby, (human) about 8 months ago and working out the mums size using this Alpaca scale ……… her baby would have been 36 pound.

The Picture attached is of Mum & Cria at one day old.
